Chicken Bacon Ranch Sourdough Sandwich
Juicy chicken, crispy bacon, gooey melted cheese, creamy ranch, and toasted sourdough stacked into one gloriously unnecessary sandwich.
Chicken. Bacon. Ranch. Sourdough. There are certain combinations that do not require a lengthy sales presentation.
This sandwich takes juicy seasoned chicken, seriously crispy bacon, melty cheese, fresh lettuce and tomato, and enough creamy ranch to make the whole thing dangerously easy to finish.
Put it all between golden toasted sourdough and you've got a sandwich that's crunchy, creamy, smoky, cheesy, fresh, and just messy enough to confirm you made the right decision.
🥓 Chicken Bacon Ranch Sourdough Sandwich
Juicy chicken, crisp bacon, melted cheese, fresh toppings, and creamy ranch piled high on toasted sourdough.
🥪 Ingredients
- 4 thick slices sourdough bread
- 1 large boneless skinless chicken breast, about 8 ounces
- 4 slices bacon
- 2 slices cheddar, Monterey Jack, or provolone cheese
- 1/3 cup ranch dressing
- 4 slices ripe tomato
- 4 leaves crisp lettuce
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon softened butter or olive oil for toasting the bread
🔥 How to Make It
-
Prepare the chicken.
Slice the chicken breast horizontally into two thinner cutlets. Season both sides with garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. -
Cook the bacon.
Cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crisp. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and resist eating all of it before the sandwich exists. -
Cook the chicken.
Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the chicken for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through to 165°F / 74°C in the center. -
Add the cheese.
Place one slice of cheese over each piece of hot chicken. Cover the skillet for 30–60 seconds, just until the cheese melts. -
Toast the sourdough.
Lightly butter or brush the bread with olive oil and toast until golden and crisp around the edges while remaining chewy in the center. -
Build the sandwich.
Spread ranch over the inside of each piece of sourdough. Add lettuce, tomato, cheesy chicken, and two slices of crispy bacon to each sandwich. -
Close and serve.
Top with the remaining sourdough, press gently, slice, and serve while the chicken and cheese are still warm.
🐔 Don't Dry Out the Chicken
Chicken breast goes from juicy to suspiciously similar to drywall faster than anyone would like.
Using thinner chicken cutlets helps them cook quickly and evenly. Pull them from the heat once the center reaches 165°F / 74°C.
Then melt the cheese directly over the hot chicken so you get maximum gooeyness without cooking the chicken for another geological era.
🍞 Why Sourdough Is Perfect for Chicken Bacon Ranch
Chicken bacon ranch is not a delicate sandwich.
You've got juicy chicken, dressing, tomato, melted cheese, and bacon all competing for available real estate.
Toasted sourdough has the structure to handle all of that without surrendering halfway through lunch, and its tangy flavor keeps the ranch, bacon, and cheese from becoming overwhelmingly rich.
🏆 Four Ways to Make It Even Better
🥓 Keep the Bacon Crispy
Crunch matters here. Cook the bacon until crisp and add it right before serving so it doesn't disappear into the ranch.
🧀 Melt the Cheese on the Chicken
Adding cheese while the chicken is still in the skillet gives you better melting and helps keep the sandwich together.
🥬 Add Something Fresh
Crisp lettuce and ripe tomato cut through the richness and keep the sandwich from becoming one enormous beige food event.
🍞 Toast, Don't Incinerate
The sourdough should be golden and crisp on the outside while retaining some chew in the middle.
🤤 Chicken Bacon Ranch Variations
The original is already carrying a lot of delicious baggage, but there's always room for more.
- Use pepper jack cheese for extra heat
- Add sliced avocado
- Add pickled jalapeños
- Swap regular ranch for spicy ranch
- Add thinly sliced red onion
- Use grilled chicken instead of skillet-cooked chicken
- Add a drizzle of buffalo sauce
- Use leftover roasted chicken for an even faster sandwich
