Sourdough BLT Sandwich
Crispy bacon, juicy tomato, fresh lettuce, and golden toasted sourdough. The classic BLT was already good. Sourdough just gave it better shoes.
A BLT does not need seventeen ingredients and a motivational speech. It needs bacon, lettuce, tomato, and bread that knows what it's doing.
The trick is making every one of those ingredients count: bacon that actually crunches, ripe tomato that tastes like tomato, cold crisp lettuce, creamy mayo, and sourdough toasted just enough to stand up to the whole operation.
Done right, this Sourdough BLT is salty, juicy, crunchy, creamy, tangy, and approximately five times more exciting than the sandwich you were originally planning to make.
🥓 Sourdough BLT Sandwich
Crispy bacon, ripe tomato, fresh lettuce, creamy mayo, and toasted sourdough in one seriously good classic sandwich.
🥪 Ingredients
- 2 thick slices sourdough bread
- 4 slices bacon
- 2 to 3 thick slices ripe tomato
- 2 to 3 leaves crisp romaine, iceberg, or butter lettuce
- 1 1/2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon butter or olive oil for toasting the bread, optional
- Pinch of salt
- Freshly ground black pepper
🔥 How to Make It
-
Cook the bacon.
Cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until deeply browned and crisp. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain. -
Prepare the tomato.
Slice the tomato thick enough that it actually contributes something. Season lightly with salt and black pepper, then let it sit for a few minutes while you finish the sandwich. -
Toast the sourdough.
Toast the bread until golden and lightly crisp. You can toast it dry or use a little butter or olive oil for extra flavor. -
Add the mayo.
Spread mayonnaise generously over the inside of both slices. This is not the moment for a transparent decorative smear. -
Build the BLT.
Layer the lettuce, tomato, and crispy bacon onto one slice of sourdough. Keeping the lettuce against the bread helps create a little barrier between the juicy tomato and the toast. -
Close and serve.
Add the second slice of sourdough, press gently, slice in half, and eat immediately while the bacon is crisp and the toast still has its dignity.
🍅 The Tomato Is Not a Supporting Actor
The difference between an average BLT and a truly excellent one is often the tomato.
Use the ripest, most flavorful tomato you can find and season it with a little salt before assembling the sandwich.
If the tomato is extremely juicy, blot the slices lightly with a paper towel. You want juicy. You do not want the sandwich becoming soup.
🍞 Why Sourdough Makes a Better BLT
A BLT has moisture coming from the tomato, mayonnaise, and lettuce. It also has bacon trying to escape sideways with every bite.
Sourdough has enough chew and structure to keep everything together without turning the sandwich into an architectural project.
The slightly tangy flavor of sourdough also works beautifully with smoky bacon and sweet ripe tomatoes.
🏆 Four Ways to Make Your BLT Better
🥓 Cook the Bacon Crisp
A BLT needs texture. Cook the bacon until crisp enough to provide real crunch against the tomato and mayo.
🍅 Season the Tomato
A tiny pinch of salt and black pepper transforms the tomato from filler into one of the best parts of the sandwich.
🥬 Keep the Lettuce Cold
Crisp, chilled lettuce gives you that fresh crunch that balances the warm toast and bacon.
🍞 Don't Over-Toast
You want golden and crisp, not a sourdough roofing shingle. The center should still have a little chew.
🤤 BLT Variations Worth Trying
The classic version is excellent, but nobody said we had to remain emotionally committed to only three letters.
- Add sliced avocado for a BLTA
- Add a fried egg for breakfast
- Use chipotle mayo for smoky heat
- Add sharp cheddar or provolone
- Add pickled jalapeños
- Use arugula for a peppery bite
- Add a drizzle of hot honey
🐿️ Squirrelly Girl Warning
There is a very specific point during every BLT where the tomato begins sliding out one side while the bacon exits the other.
Do not panic. Hold firmly. Commit to the bite.
