Ham & Swiss Honey Mustard Sourdough Sandwich
Savory ham, melty Swiss cheese, sweet-tangy honey mustard, and fresh toppings piled onto golden toasted sourdough. Classic deli flavors, upgraded by better bread.
Ham and Swiss is one of those combinations that has absolutely nothing left to prove.
Add a sweet, tangy swipe of honey mustard and pile everything onto crisp toasted sourdough, though, and suddenly the humble deli sandwich starts acting like it made reservations.
This Ham & Swiss Honey Mustard Sourdough Sandwich brings together salty ham, nutty melted Swiss, crunchy lettuce, juicy tomato, and just enough honey mustard to make every bite sweet, sharp, savory, and ridiculously easy to keep eating.
🥪 Ham & Swiss Honey Mustard Sourdough Sandwich
Savory ham, melted Swiss, honey mustard, crisp lettuce, tomato, and golden toasted sourdough.
🥪 Ingredients
- 4 thick slices sourdough bread
- 8 ounces thinly sliced ham
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 leaves crisp lettuce
- 4 slices ripe tomato
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise, optional
- 2 tablespoons honey mustard
- 1 tablespoon softened butter or olive oil for toasting
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
🔥 How to Make It
-
Toast the sourdough.
Lightly butter or brush the bread with olive oil and toast it in a skillet until golden and crisp around the edges. -
Warm the ham.
Add the ham to the warm skillet for about 30–60 seconds, just until heated through. We're warming it, not turning it into ham jerky. -
Melt the Swiss.
Divide the ham into two portions and top each with two slices of Swiss. Cover the skillet briefly and let the cheese soften and melt. -
Add the spreads.
Spread honey mustard over two slices of toasted sourdough. Add mayonnaise to the remaining slices if using. -
Build the sandwiches.
Add lettuce and tomato to the bottom slices, then top with the warm ham and melted Swiss. -
Season and close.
Add a little freshly ground black pepper, top with the remaining sourdough slices, and press gently. -
Slice and serve.
Cut in half and serve while the cheese is still soft and melty.
🍯 Don't Let the Honey Mustard Take Over
Honey mustard is here to balance the salty ham and nutty Swiss, not bury them.
A thin, even layer gives you sweetness and tang in every bite while letting the rest of the sandwich remain involved in the conversation.
🍞 Why Sourdough Makes Ham & Swiss Better
Ham, Swiss, and honey mustard already bring salty, creamy, sweet, and tangy flavors to the table.
Sourdough fits right into that combination because it adds another layer of savory tang without making the sandwich heavy.
Toasting the bread gives you crisp edges and enough structure to hold the warm ham, melted cheese, tomato, and dressing while the center stays pleasantly chewy.
In short: this sandwich deserves more than forgettable deli bread.
🏆 Four Ways to Make It Better
🧀 Melt the Swiss
Warm Swiss changes the entire sandwich. Let it melt directly over the ham so the two become properly acquainted.
🍯 Balance the Mustard
Use enough honey mustard to taste it in every bite, but not so much that the sandwich becomes a condiment delivery system.
🍅 Use a Good Tomato
A ripe, seasoned tomato adds freshness and acidity that cuts nicely through the ham and cheese.
🍞 Toast, Don't Destroy
Golden and crisp is perfect. Hard enough to double as building material is not.
🤤 Ham & Swiss Variations
The classic version is hard to beat, but sourdough gives you plenty of room to get creative.
- Add thinly sliced red onion
- Add dill pickles for extra tang
- Swap honey mustard for Dijon
- Add sliced apple for sweet crunch
- Add arugula instead of lettuce
- Swap Swiss for Gruyère
- Add crispy bacon
- Press the entire sandwich in a skillet for a hot, melty version
🐿️ Squirrelly Girl Warning
This sandwich may look responsible because it contains lettuce.
Please remember it also contains a respectable pile of ham, melted Swiss, honey mustard, and toasted sourdough. The lettuce is doing what it can.
