Sourdough Bread Poem (Dr. Seuss Style)

Sourdough Bread Poem (Dr. Seuss Style)

In a bowl in a kitchen not tidy, not neat,
Lived a bubbly blob that loved flour to eat.
It wiggled! It jiggled! It burped with delight—
“Oh feed me!” it giggled, both morning and night.

Now this wasn’t normal—oh no, not at all,
This blob had a name… Squirrelly Girl (quite the call).
She rose up your dough with a magical flair,
And filled up your home with that bakery air.

You mix and you stir with a splash and a plop,
Flour here, water there—don’t you dare stop!
It’s shaggy! It’s sticky! It clings to your hand,
But trust in the process… it’s all going as planned.

Then stretch it! Then fold it! Then turn it around!
Like a doughy soft dance on your floured-up ground.
It strengthens! It tightens! It builds up its might,
Till it’s ready to rise in the warm cozy light.

Now into the oven—preheated just right,
With a pot hot as heck (watch your hands—yikes, that bite!).
Covered it bakes with a hiss and a steam,
Then uncovered it turns to a crusty gold dream.

CRACK! goes the crust as it cools on the rack,
You slice it—OH WOW—there’s no turning back.
Open crumb bubbles! A tangy soft chew!
“Did I really bake this?” …Yes, yes—you did too.

But wait! said the dough (yes, it spoke with a grin),
“You couldn’t have done it without what’s within…”

That wild little starter, so lively and bold,
The heart of your bread (as all bakers are told).
